Photographing the Nude: Art and Issues
Mpls Photo Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, with Douglas Beasley, March 6 – 7, 2010
Join us for a unique photographic opportunity to expand your photographic skill while working with the figure, not as an abstract or anonymous object but as catalyst for artistic collaboration with the model, both male and female. Some of the most memorable and deeply personal images of nudes have come as the result of a special connection between the photographer and subject, rather than the model as ‘Barbie’ or ‘Ken’ dolls that know how to pose. We will work on ways to create this connection and find ways to make more powerful and meaningful images. Attention will be given to lighting, background, composition and exposure. We will also discuss the respect and sensitivity necessary between the photographer and model and some of the politics involved in using someone else’s body for your own artistic expression.
Using the large beautiful natural light studios of Mpls Photo Center along with several set-up backgrounds with basic lighting, our class will include demos, examples and photo exercises but the main emphasis will be in creating images and developing a personal style, making more expressive and unique images. Be sure to bring extra memory cards and a spare camera battery.
Who should attend:
While participants must have a strong working knowledge of their camera, the creative process of image making will be emphasized over the mechanics of camera use. Both digital and film, in all formats are welcome. Open to all levels of experience but better suited to those looking to expand their creativity and vision than those seeking technical help. This is not a class to learn how to ‘pose’ models but for those seeking to try working with the figure into their image making. It is appropriate for those with no previous figure model experience.

Student testimonial from this workshop:
“I’ve known Doug’s reputation for years, and finally this year I had the opportunity to work with him and take one of his workshops at MPC. What an amazing experience. He has the uncanny ability to gently guide you and push your limits as a photographer. I’m just waiting for him to announce his dates for next years trip to Cuba. I want to be the one of the first to sign-up.” — Clare O’Neill, Saint Paul, MN

“You should be congratulated for a great workshop, It was interesting that all of the new photographers to this type of photography adapted so well. Thanks again!” — Gary Eckhardt
“You created a great space energetically that fostered creativity and openness and safety AND fun, I think, for everyone there. I have not really even worked the the figure, let alone nudes, so I was a bit apprehensive. That's why I was surprised I had fun. I just wanted to let you know I appreciated the experience on many levels!” — Jennifer Starbright
“I entered the workshop not knowing at all what to expect, and emerged transformed on a soul level. Not only did the workshop leave me energized creatively, but I learned a lot about myself, my own body issues, and was able to challenge my own perceptions on many levels. Thank you for being a kind and patient teacher.” — Gail Overstreet
“I had a very rewarding time experimenting, working with the other photographers, and especially meeting the wonderful models that you arranged to be there. I am a slow learner, but determined. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into making this class successful for the participants.” — John Olson
