The Sacred Urban Landscape
Pacific New Media, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, HI, with Douglas Beasley, March 10 - 11, 2012
This is not about making 'pretty' pictures or 'postcard' like records of one's travels. It is about making a deeper, more authentic, connection to 'place' and learning to express that deeper connection in your photography. We will be using the land, water, sky as well as the urban environment to convey an emotional experience into a visual one. We will explore making, not taking, photographs that are less generic and more personal. This will be about the inner journey as well nourishing a deepening connection to one's heart and soul, then bringing that awareness into our image making process. Self-expression and introspection will be encouraged. We will work on giving our photos more simplicity and clarity while adding layers of meaning to make stronger, more powerful and most importantly, more personal images.
Inspiration will be sparked by a balance of visual exercises, photo assignments, demos, class discussions, readings, photographic examples and instructor presentations. Bring your cameras to class because daily photographic assignments and exercises, along with field trips with Doug, will be a big part of this experience. Fun, laughter and introspection are to be expected.
Presented by Pacific New Media at the University of Hawaii, this workshop is a unique opportunity to rejuvenate your creative spirit as you explore landscape photography on a deeper level. The weekend will include active photographic and visual exercises to expand the creative growth of workshop participants. You'll work with your camera a well as your heart to explore visual aesthetics and create more personally meaningful and emotionally evocative images.
Who Should Attend:
The workshop will emphasize personal expression and creative vision over the mechanics of camera use. However, students should have a good working knowledge of their cameras as well as a desire to take their image making to a more meaningful and personal level.
